Strikingly Understated – The Fläpps System

Fläpps is gloriously minimalist, thought through down to the felt tab. Sometimes barely visible and yet a real eye-catcher. Behind it is a wall-hung furniture system: desk, shelf, coat rack, kitchen table, shoe rack — each module a standalone piece of furniture in birch plywood, folded via a specially developed fitting. Unfolded, full function; folded shut, a flat surface on the wall. The printed modules then simply hang there — like a picture that happens to have a desk attached.

Making room for indecision!

A modular wall system with no rules. Freedom – and, where needed, indecision – is the motto. Each Fläpps module is a standalone product in its own right: wall shelf, secretary, coat rack or table — and because all modules share the same grid (three widths: 60, 80 and 100 cm, five heights, three depths), each one fits beside any other. You can start with a single shelf and extend the wall over years; the grid stays true to you. Combined, Fläpps becomes a wall system for every area of living, working and hosting.

Where do you put the home office when the floor plan leaves no room for a desk and the like? And what do you do when work shouldn’t take over life at home? A fold-down wall desk answers both: unfolded, a fully-fledged workplace; folded shut, a calm front — and then the end of the working day is visibly the end of the working day. For planning: the worktop measures the outer dimension minus 10 cm, so on the 100×60 wall secretary that’s 90×50 cm. And with the Up&Down add-on, all Fläpps tables and secretaries become steplessly height-adjustable — sitting or standing, there’s no need to commit there either.

At first you think: but I don’t even have a small kitchen. And then you realise that with a table like this you have an even bigger kitchen. The Kittchen Tisch is a fold-down wall table for the kitchen: it folds down against the wall when you need the surface, and disappears when you don’t. All kitchen wall tables are made of HPL — wipe-clean, because kitchens are, after all, for cooking.

Come in, fold luck in. The wall coat rack keeps jackets within reach and disappears when no one’s coming. The slim shoe rack works like the Fläpps shelf — only a set of magnets tilts the boards at an angle; the largest module (80×80) holds up to 12 pairs. Folded shut, of both there remains: almost nothing.

Where it all began – the folding chair.

Why does a chair stand in the way when no one’s sitting on it? That question is where Fläpps began. The answer: a folding chair in birch plywood that folds down to 2 cm and hangs on the wall — the printed versions like a picture. Officially rated to 100 kg, with a moving backrest that gives a little. More comfortable than it looks.

The elements

Freedom and the agony of choice are the motto: 14 modules in three widths, five heights and three depths. Endlessly combinable, until there’s nothing left to see of the wall. Closed, a wall panel, wall art or almost nothing. Unfolded, a near-endless variety — and, if you like, a different shelf every day. Hanging them is no drama either, by the way: every module comes with an instruction sheet that doubles as a drilling template. Mark, drill, hang. The large shelf flaps hold up to 45 kg, the flat ones up to 30 kg — and you can reorder individual modules and parts instead of buying new.
